Nine leading Irish traditional musicians, led by GBH Celtic Sojourn music director Keith Murphy, in a candlelit concert built around the story of Lowell’s Irish founding.
The concert brings together nine of the leading Celtic traditional musicians for a candlelit program of carols, dance tunes and slow airs in a room glowing with candlelight.
The company is led by music director Keith Murphy, who has been music director of GBH’s A St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn since 2012. He is joined by uilleann piper Joey Abarta; concertina player and singer Brenda Castles of County Meath; the quartet Forsyth — Kate Knudsvig, Erin Shea Hogan, Kat Wallace and Helen Kuhar — with two fiddles, guitar and four voices in close harmony; and The Murphy Beds, the duo of Eamon O’Leary and Jefferson Hamer, who recorded the Child Ballads album with Anaïs Mitchell.
The program draws on the Irish, Scottish and English winter traditions, from carols sung for four centuries and more to unaccompanied slow airs on the uilleann pipes and full-company dance tune sets.
